Ruth Moody in Review

Music Australia Guide – July Review

The Austrailian-born, Winnipeg-raised member of Canadian folk-roots trio The Wailin’ Jennys has always leaned more towards country in her songs with The Jennys.

On her debut album, Moody’s Americana heart beats strong as her divine voice and banjo take centre stage amid the sparing guitar, pedal steel, strings and percussion.

Although she brings in a small town of guests (including her fellow Jennys), Moody never sounds anything but in control. A hightlight is Never Said Goodbye, a strings-laced vocal and piano duet that, although short – and not particularly country – burns into the memory.
